Frequently Asked Questions

  • BetterNot is a project we started after getting back blood test results showing terrible cholesterol scores despite living a “healthy” lifestyle.

We made a mobile app to help see through the pretty menu pictures and avoid the foods that quietly wreck heart health.

Since large restaurant chains are legally required to post thier ingredients, we’ve analyzed 300+ restaurants and 10,000+ of their meals using guidelines from the AHA, ACC, NIH, USDA, and Harvard to give science-backed, unbiased scores to eat better and live longer.

  • We don’t run ads, we don’t sell your data, and we don’t take money from restaurants.

The small subscription fee lets us stay independent and cover the work it takes to analyze thousands of meals using medical research.

    Paying users = honest scores.

  • Our scoring is based on established medical research and guidelines from the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, National Institutes of Health, USDA, Harvard Public Health, and large clinical studies on LDL cholesterol and heart disease risk. No bro science, podcast quotes, or ChatGPT allowed.

  • No. Never.

Restaurants can’t pay to boost their score, hide bad items, or get special treatment.

Everything you see in the app is independent and purely based on nutritional data and medical research.

  • Each meal gets a score built from its impact on LDL cholesterol, saturated fat, sodium, fiber, refined carbs, seed oils, and cooking methods, all the factors most strongly linked to atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in arteries).

Higher scores = better for long-term heart health.

    Lower scores = higher risk.

  • “Healthy” marketing doesn’t always mean healthy food.

Some places use more fried oils, more sodium, or more saturated fats than fast-food chains.

    The app ignores branding.

Scores come only from nutritional data and heart-disease research.
